About Pollen in Colombo

Colombo’s dry season (January-March) is dominated by grass and tree pollen; Guinea Grass (Megathyrsus maximus) prolific in Viharamahadevi Park and Diyasaru Park; Casuarina (Casuarina equisetifolia) widespread near Galle Face Green. Teak (Tectona grandis) contributes from suburban outskirts. The Kelani River banks have heavy Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) growth.

High humidity and sea breezes trap allergens against city high-rises. Monsoon rains (May-September) cause high Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) spore counts, from decaying organic matter in Beddagana Wetland Park and damp urban environments near Beira Lake.
