About Pollen in Basel

Basel’s spring allergy season (March–May) is dominated by Birch and Ash pollen; Birch (Betula) prolific in Kannenfeldpark and Schützenmattpark; Ash (Fraxinus) widespread along River Rhine riverbanks. Early season (February) has Hazel (Corylus) and Alder (Alnus) from the Hardwald forest. Summer (May–August) has high Grass (Poaceae) levels, originating from Merian Gärten and the Bruderholz hillsides.

The Rhine Valley’s topography and stagnant air masses trap pollen; thermal winds from the Jura Mountains distribute spores across the city. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in the Allschwiler Wald and damp river environments.
