About Pollen in Bern

Bern’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Birch and Hazel pollen; Birch (Betula) prolific in the Bremgartenwald and Dählhölzli; Hazel (Corylus) widespread along the Aare riverbanks. Ash (Fraxinus) and Oak (Quercus) contribute from the Gurten hill. Summer (May-July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Allmend meadows and fields in the Mittelland.

The Aare river loop and steep slopes trap pollen in the lower city; surrounding hills create wind patterns that concentrate spores. Autumn and winter see high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) counts, from leaf litter in the Engehalbinsel and damp river environments.
