About Pollen in Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam’s dry season (June-September) is dominated by Grass and Casuarina pollen; Grass (Poaceae) is prolific along the Msimbazi River and in Pugu Hills Forest Reserve; Casuarina (Casuarina equisetifolia) is widespread near Coco Beach and the Msasani Peninsula. Acacia (Vachellia) contributes significantly from the University of Dar es Salaam grounds.

High humidity and coastal winds affect pollen distribution across the city. Wet seasons (March-May and October-December) see elevated Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) spore counts; these thrive in the damp Jangwani wetlands and the Botanical Garden. Coastal breezes carry spores into dense urban residential areas.
