About Pollen in San Diego

San Diego’s spring allergy season (February-May) is dominated by Oak and Sycamore pollen; Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) prolific in Balboa Park and Presidio Park; California Sycamore (Platanus racemosa) widespread along San Diego River riverbanks. California Juniper (Juniperus californica) contributes significantly from Mission Trails Regional Park. Summer and autumn (June-October) see high Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) and Western Ragweed (Ambrosia psilostachya) pollen levels, originating from the Otay Valley and along Tijuana River riverbanks.

Coastal winds and inland canyons can trap pollen, leading to localised high concentrations. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp soils and leaf litter near Torrey Pines State Reserve.
