About Pollen in Wichita

Wichita’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Cedar and Elm pollen; Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) dense along the Arkansas River and Big Slough; Elm (Ulmus) widespread in Sim Park. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly from Riverside Park. Summer (June-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Pawnee Prairie Park and along Arkansas River banks. Late summer has high Ragweed (Ambrosia) counts from the surrounding plains.

Flat prairie terrain and strong southern winds transport allergens long distances into the city. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from humidity near the Little Arkansas River and leaf litter in Chisholm Creek Park.
